Our take

Grapefruit, pineapple, and red apple open Zen in a rush of fruit, before freesia, lotus, and gardenia settle it into a fuller floral heart. The rose in the top notes is easy to miss, buried under grapefruit and pineapple until the fruit calms down and lets it through. Patchouli, cedar, and incense move in underneath, turning what started fizzy and sweet into something dry and woody at the edges, the shift happening gradually rather than all at once.

Longevity keeps an even, steady pace, and the sillage forms a small, personal cloud around the wearer, felt at close range. Daylight hours suit it best, especially through spring, when the fruity top notes have the most to do.

Fans of fruity florals who eventually want a drier finish should get along well with the patchouli and incense base, though anyone hoping for pure freshness all the way through may find the shift abrupt. The incense is the surprise in the base, adding a warm, resinous note underneath the woody patchouli. What lasts in the memory is the smell of orange peel gone dry and dusty, patchouli clinging where the fruit used to be.
