Our take

Inoui opens with a slap of green — galbanum and juniper sharp as broken stems, the lemon more bitter than bright, a peach that feels bruised before it ever ripens. This is not a demure entrance. It’s a chypre from 1976, and it wears its era like a weathered leather satchel left out in a spring rain. The heart softens just enough: pine needles and thyme cut through the jasmine’s sweetness, while freesia adds a soapy, almost translucent texture. Then the base drops like a carpet of damp oakmoss, cedar dust, and myrrh’s medicinal warmth — and civetta, that animalic note that purrs beneath everything, turning the composition from merely green into something feral and intimate.

Its character is an old greenhouse in October, where a gardener’s wool coat hangs next to a crate of overripe peaches. The mossy earth seeps through the cracks. This is not a crowd-pleaser. It sits close to the skin (sillage at 3.23, longevity a respectable 3.67) and demands you lean in. That’s both its charm and its weakness: you have to wear it for yourself, not for applause.

Best on a crisp autumn afternoon, perhaps a weekend walk through wet leaves. It suits the person who loves vintage chypres and isn’t afraid of civet’s rough edge. Skip it if you want something bright or easy — this fragrance is a quiet growl, not a cheerful wave.
