Our take

Anna Sui’s Romantica Exotica opens with a spritz of grapefruit and lemon so sharp you almost taste the pith, but black currant quickly sweetens the bite into something candied and carefree. That citrus rush dissolves into a heart of jasmine and lotus, watery and floral in a way that feels less like a garden and more like a hotel pool at noon: chlorine-tinged petals floating on calm, warm water, a faint breeze carrying neroli from a nearby spa. The dry down is where it gets interesting, cottonwood lending a clean, almost papery softness while gardenia and sandalwood try to anchor the whole thing in something creamy. But they don’t quite manage. This is a lightweight in every sense — longevity clocks in around two hours, sillage a polite whisper rather than a statement. It’s a perfectly pleasant, synthetic-leaning mainstream floral that doesn’t pretend to be anything else. Who is this for? The person who wants to smell like a fruity drink by the pool, not the one trailing incense through a concert hall. Wear it on a spring morning when you need a mood lift, or on a sticky summer afternoon when anything heavier would cloy. Skip it if you expect a perfume to last through coffee or conversation. Is that too much to ask from a bottle that evaporates before you’ve even left the house?
