Our take

Nero Oudh opens with a sharp, almost metallic bite of saffron and cypriol, a green and peppery strike that quickly softens into the creamy sweetness of ylang-ylang and magnolia. This is not a gentle entrance; it announces itself like a creaking door in an old palace. The heart turns darker and more resinous, with gurjan balsam and guaiac wood wrapping the Bulgarian rose in a smoky, leathery embrace. As it dries down, the Indian oud rises from the base, earthy and barnyard-tinged, smoothed by patchouli, ambergris, and a whisper of vanilla. The whole composition feels like a black velvet cloak embroidered with wilted roses and stained with incense smoke.

Despite the floral notes, this is a heavy, brooding scent. The sillage is moderate, as reflected in its 3.65 rating, and longevity is solid at over eight hours. It leans natural in its resinous core but the top notes have a faint synthetic sheen that keeps it from feeling like a true attar. This is niche through and through, a love letter to oud that refuses to apologize for its density.

It suits the person who enjoys wearing rich, melancholic florals in cold weather and who understands that oud is not a crowd-pleaser. Skip it if you want something airy or if you dislike animalic undertones. Wear it on a winter evening, preferably with a coat and nowhere to be for at least ten hours. Why rush something that only gets better as it settles?
