Our take

Stepping into a room where the air is thick with woodsmoke and someone has just set down a cup of dark coffee beside a glass of spiced rum creates the immediate atmosphere of Lovers and Strangers. The opening is bold and slightly abrasive, with the medicinal sharpness of cade oil cutting through the bitter coffee and the boozy sweetness of prunella. It does not arrive politely. The prunella and rum provide a syrupy, fermented fruitiness that feels heavy in the air, creating a scent profile that is unapologetically dense and dark from the very first moment.

As the initial intensity settles, the heart reveals a textured blend of dry cloves and aromatic tobacco, softened by a rose that smells more like dried petals than a fresh bouquet. The tonka bean bridges the gap toward the base, where patchouli and sandalwood provide a creamy, earthy foundation. The amber and vanilla here are not bright or sugary. They are deep and resinous, wrapping the tobacco in a warm, golden haze that feels intimate and enclosed, like standing near a fireplace in a dimly lit space.

Composed by Maxime Exler, this TOBBA release captures the feeling of a late evening conversation in the cold months, where the world outside is dark and the air inside is rich with warmth. It is a choice for the person who enjoys a scent that feels like a heavy wool coat, preferring their fragrance to be a complex mix of spice, smoke, and floral depth rather than a light accessory.
