Our take

Magic by Al-Jazeera Perfumes is a curious creature, and I mean that as a compliment. It opens with a sharp slap of salt and ozonic air, like sticking your head out a car window on a coastal highway. That marine chill is genuinely surprising, almost bracing. Then the Turkish rose arrives, not demure or dewy but swirled with praline into a sticky, candied jam. The heart is where this fragrance either wins you over or loses you: it is sweet, yes, but with a tartness from the rose that keeps it from collapsing into straight dessert. The base is a thick blanket of vanilla and Amber Xtreme, a synthetic amber that feels plush and slightly overheated, with patchouli dusting the edges in a dry, woody finish. The whole thing reminds me of a salt-encrusted rose dipped in caramel, left on a sun-warmed rock. A little strange, a little wonderful.

Longevity is solid, around four to five hours on skin, and sillage sits at a polite arm’s length, which suits its personality. It works in every season, but winter is its true home. That salty opening cuts through cold air, and the heavy sweet base wraps you like a scarf. Wear it to a night out where you want to feel modern and a bit unpredictable. Skip it if you prefer natural, airy florals or clean skin scents. This is unapologetically synthetic and proud of it. Who else would launch a rose praline with sea salt and call it Magic?
