Our take

A jazz club in late November, the air just beginning to bite, is exactly where Nightshade Man lives. You press through the heavy door and the scent hits before the music does. It is the bitter tang of a freshly peeled grapefruit, sharp enough to make your eyes water slightly, immediately followed by the heavy, golden heat of saffron. This is not a light citrus fragrance; the fruit is merely a bright opening chord before the real composition begins. The saffron here is dense and leathery, twisting with the resinous depth of amber that smells less like candy and more like ancient tree sap. It creates a tension between the cold, wet night outside and the dry, spicy warmth radiating from the skin. The patchouli anchors it, providing a dark, earthy foundation that prevents the spices from floating away into something ephemeral. It feels like a cashmere coat draped over a velvet banquette: substantial, expensive, and deeply comforting. You do not smell the individual notes so much as the atmosphere they construct: a room where the smoke from a cloves cigarette lingers in the curtains and the bar top is sticky with spilled orange liqueur. It stays close, a private bubble of heat that only those leaning in to hear a secret will detect, lasting through the final set and the walk to the taxi.
