Our take

Dead of Night opens with a sharp, green snap of violet leaf and bergamot, a brief chill before the florals arrive. The heart is a dense, creamy clutch of rose, jasmine, and tuberose, not clean or gossamer but bruised and heady, as if the petals have been left out in the cold. Then the base takes hold, and the fragrance reveals its true nature: a dark, resinous blend of oud, incense, amber, and vanilla, sweetened by bourbon vanilla and sandalwood, with a faint powdery musk lingering underneath. The overall character is a night-blooming garden locked inside a crypt, the flowers still wet with dew and the stone walls sweating resin. It feels opulent and slightly synthetic in its ozonic shimmer, a niche construction that refuses to be meek or pretty.

Longevity is solid though not beastly at 3.7 out of 5, and sillage sits close to the skin at just over 3, so expect a whisper rather than a shout. That restraint actually suits the mood. This is not a fragrance for daylight or for those who want a clean, airy floral. Skip it if you find powdery or aquatic accents distracting in an otherwise woody oriental. Wear it in fall or winter, preferably at night, when the incense and vanilla can unfurl without competition. It suits a person who treats fragrance like a private ritual, a velvet collar turned up against the wind, and who understands that dead of night can smell alive.
