Our take

L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Intense opens citrus-forward but moves quickly into smoke and spice. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud composed it in 2007, starting on yuzu, bergamot, sweet orange and mandarin before nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon and saffron push the citrus into warmer, spicier territory.

Incense and papyrus take over by the base, giving it a genuinely smoky, almost dry-paper quality that's unusual for a fragrance this citrus-bright up top. Ambergris, benzoin and amber round the smoke out with warmth, so the drydown ends up soft and warm rather than sharp or ashy.

It works equally well for daytime or evening plans, and it holds up across every season of the year without leaning hard toward any single one, unusual for a fragrance built this heavily around citrus. Staying power is long, the incense and amber carrying the composition well after the citrus fades, and its reach stays measured, apparent mainly to whoever ends up nearby.

Anyone curious about citrus paired with real smoke and incense should find plenty to like here, an incense stick burning slowly beside a bowl of fresh mandarins, smoke and citrus sharing the same close air.
