Our take

Lime and mandarin orange open L'Eau Bleue d'Issey Pour Homme bright and a little sharp, rosemary and lemongrass giving the citrus an herbal, slightly bitter backbone rather than a purely sweet one.

Cypress and juniper berries push the heart in a green, almost gin-like direction, ginger and pink pepper adding warmth, and star anise a faint licorice note that comes and goes. May rose and nasturtium keep a floral thread running underneath, thin but present, giving the whole middle a touch of softness so it never turns purely herbal or medicinal.

Atlas cedar, patchouli and oakmoss carry the base into earthy, woody territory, sandalwood and amber softening the edges while ambrette adds a musky finish. It is long-lasting once the citrus opening clears, and the sillage sits at a modest, comfortable range, noticed by whoever stands close, felt more than broadcast to the room. Spring and summer are its strongest seasons, with the citrus and green heart suited to warm, bright days, though it holds up reasonably well into a cooler fall too. Rosemary and cedar anchor the whole composition, giving what could otherwise read as a simple citrus a genuinely structured, herbal backbone.
