Our take

Heraud opens with a sharp, almost brittle cocoa dusted over bergamot’s bitter rind, and for a moment you brace for a gourmand wallop. Then the dates arrive, sticky and dark, folding the cocoa into a syrupy fruitiness that the white flowers do little to lift; they just muddy the sweetness into something heavy and pondering. The drydown is where Andy Tauer shows his hand: vanilla and ambergris melt into a woody, musky base, all warm spice and powdery amber, like an old cashmere scarf that’s been folded in a drawer with a dried date and a shard of cedar. It feels dense, natural in its thickness, and distinctly niche in its refusal to brighten up. This is a fragrance that sulks beautifully. It suits the winter lover who wants to smell edible but not like a bakery, someone who appreciates a brooding, intimate presence rather than a sillage bomb. And make no mistake, the sillage here is modest, a whisper on wool rather than a shout, and longevity settles into a comfortable four or five hours before turning into soft musky skin. Skip it if you need projection to do the talking or if you find sweet animalic scents claustrophobic. Wear it in deep fall or winter, preferably at night, when the air is cold enough to make the warmth feel like a secret.
