Panax Ginseng opens with galbanum. The note is sharp and resinous, leaning into a bitter green edge that feels immediate and unsoftened. It does not ease the wearer in with brightness or citrus. The start is direct and leans heavily on that single green facet.
The heart introduces green nard, Himalayan nard, and Indian lotus. The nard varieties bring a root-like, slightly medicinal herbal quality that deepens the opening rather than lightening it. The lotus adds a faint watery softness, but it stays in the background while the herbs continue to lead.
The base is where the fragrance settles into its full weight. Castoreum and myrrh join patchouli to create a dense, earthy foundation. The castoreum adds a leathery, animalic touch that feels heavy against the skin. Myrrh brings a balsamic, slightly amber warmth, while patchouli anchors the blend with its familiar woody dirtiness. Together, they form a dry, resinous finish that is more austere than sweet.
The composition stays firmly in a dark, herbal register throughout. The galbanum never fully recedes, which keeps the scent sharp even as the heavier base notes accumulate. This makes it a challenging wear for those who prefer rounded, smooth transitions. It can feel aggressively bitter and unyielding from start to finish.
