The heavy wooden doors of a private library swing shut, sealing out the afternoon. Inside, the air is warm and still, carrying the scent of old leather and polished wood. A bowl of fresh raspberries sits near an open window, their juice staining the edge of a porcelain plate. Pink pepper clings to the fruit, adding a sharp, bright bite to the humid room.
Rose petals are scattered across a velvet chaise, their scent thick and lush rather than light. A spoonful of sugar has been dusted over the flowers, making the air taste heavy and candied. Earthy patchouli grounds the sweetness, preventing the room from smelling like a jar of preserves. It smells like a garden that has been brought indoors and preserved under glass.
Smoke begins to curl from a carved incense burner in the corner. Dark oud mixes with warm amber, creating a resinous cloud that settles into the grain of the sandalwood panels lining the walls. The vanilla accord wraps around the sharper wood notes, softening the edges of the smoke. It is a dense, opulent atmosphere that feels layered and textured.
The sunlight hits the dust motes dancing near the bookshelf, illuminating the blend of fruit and ancient wood.
