My Burberry Black

My Burberry Black strips the format down to almost nothing: jasmine on top, peach and rose in the middle, amber and patchouli underneath, four notes doing all the work. Francis Kurkdjian composed it for Burberry in 2016, and the simplicity is deceptive, since the amber and patchouli come in heavy enough to make the whole thing feel far denser than a four-note list suggests.

Peach softens the jasmine's sharper edge without turning the whole thing fruity, and rose keeps a cool, slightly powdery presence between the floral top and the amber-heavy base underneath.

It's built for cold weather and evening wear almost exclusively, with only a faint pull toward spring at all. Staying power is long, holding its density well after the jasmine fades into the amber, and the trail is noticeable, picked up by people nearby before you're close enough to speak to them.

This works well as a signature scent, dense enough to wear on its own without layering, built for anyone drawn to amber and patchouli over a lighter, brighter floral, the kind that ends up worked into a black wool coat hung all winter near a lit amber candle.
