Taj by Athena Fragrances does not flatter the skin that expects a clean, modern floral. The rum and civet arrive with a heavy, animalic breath that can feel unwashed and loud to anyone who prefers their iris bright and dry. This is not a polite introduction to oud. The opening is thick with boozy warmth, and the iris quickly turns powdery rather than crisp, settling into a vintage register that smells of old dressing tables and heavy curtains. Jasmine sambac and rose try to lift the heart, but they are soon pulled back into the dark wood and musk that dominate the base.
Walk into a room lit by a single lamp in late evening, coat still damp from the cold air outside, and this is the scent that clings to the sleeves. It suits someone who enjoys a fragrance with a visible shadow, one that feels lived in and slightly untamed. It is far too much for an office or a close conversation with strangers, and anyone who finds natural animalics cloying should keep the bottle on the shelf.
