Our take

A splash of whiskey, hot and biting, kicks open Dorian’s Spleen with a boozy bravado that quickly softens into a haze of spices and coffee grounds. The smoke drifts in not long after, not as a campfire but as the ghost of a burned-out cigarillo left in an ashtray. Dark chocolate and caramel wrap around the edges, turning the bitterness into something almost edible, while a fine layer of ash settles on the tongue. The drydown is where Bertrand Duchaufour’s hand shows: a woody, slightly sweet residue that clings to the skin like the last sip of a drink you didn’t want to finish.

This is not a loud fragrance. The sillage sits close, a private pleasure rather than a public announcement, and the longevity is honest but not heroic. It wears like a manila envelope stuffed with old love letters, singed at the corners, the paper smelling of dried spices and faint cocoa. There is a synthetic edge in the caramel accord that keeps it from feeling entirely natural, but it leans artfully niche, never syrupy or cheap.

Best suited for introverts who want their evening scent to match their book. Skip it if you crave projection or freshness. Wear it in the deep fall, after the sun goes down, when the air begs for something warm and melancholic. A beautiful little ache in a bottle. ☕
