Our take

Rykiel Woman opens with a plush, candied violet, the fruitiness of dates and a prick of pink pepper. It feels like a velvet ribbon tied with a loose knot. The heart swells into a peppery sunflower accord, rose and jasmine lending a waxy, almost vintage bloom. Then the base emerges—leather polished with amber, a whisper of oud, olibanum’s smoky tang, and a clean musk that keeps everything from tipping into cloying. Anne Flipo sculpted this as an Oriental Spicy, but it plays more like a dark floral with a leather spine.

The whole thing reminds me of a forgotten silk scarf found in a glove compartment of a 1990s Mercedes: powdery, a little bit dusty, but unmistakably elegant. It’s sweet in a plump, date-like way, not syrupy, and the spices are warm rather than aggressive. The synthetic edges are minimal—this feels like a careful, slightly niche take on what a mainstream house might have sanded down. Its longevity is decent (a solid workday), and the sillage sits close, which suits its intimate character. Who should wear it? Someone who wants to smell like a well-kept secret, not a shout. Skip it if you prefer crisp citrus or aquatic freshness—this is a fall-through-winter affair, perfect for a long afternoon in a wool coat or a rainy spring day. What more could you ask from a scent that balances sweet and serious like a perfectly worn leather glove?
