Character
Islay opens with galbanum, bergamot and smoke. The galbanum is green and resinous, the bergamot bright and clean, and the smoke dry rather than sooty. This top layer feels sharp and upright, giving the fragrance a clear starting point that is more aromatic than sweet. The green accord stays present as the other notes arrive, so the opening does not disappear so much as change shape.
The heart brings orris, patchouli, amber, cedar, iris and powder. The orris and iris create a soft, rooty powder that sits against the heavier patchouli and the dry cedar. Amber adds a warm spicy touch without turning the blend gourmand. The woody and powdery accords dominate here, with the green top notes still visible at the edges. The texture is smooth and a little balsamic, never sharp or medicinal.
Sandalwood, musk and vanilla form the base. The sandalwood is creamy and mild, the musk clean and close, the vanilla warm but restrained. Together they keep the powder and wood in view while adding a gentle musky finish. The overall impression is a woody, powdery, green and smoky fragrance with citrus and warm spicy accents. It suits evening wear and formal settings where a calm, composed scent is appropriate.
