Our take

Black Princess is a floral that wants to be dark and brooding but ends up wearing a velvet dress two sizes too small. It opens with a burst of ylang ylang and violet that is immediately sweet, almost candied, before neroli cuts through with a high pitched bitterness. Within minutes the rose arrives, but it is not the dewy, petal laden rose of a grand bouquet. It is a dried, powdery rose tangled with cardamom and ginger, warm but strangely restrained. The base of mate, ambergris and musk settles in close to the skin, a soft woody hum that never fully blooms. The overall character is like a pressed flower saved in a book, still fragrant but brittle, lacking the living richness the notes promise.

This is a fragrance that whispers when it should speak. Longevity barely reaches four hours and sillage is a shy personal cloud, which makes its popularity on cold days a bit of a puzzle. It feels synthetic in the top notes, then turns comfortably powdery in the dry down, sitting somewhere between mainstream and niche without fully committing to either. It suits someone who wants a polite floral with a slight spicy kick, perfect for a fall afternoon spent indoors or a winter dinner where fragrance is an afterthought rather than a statement. Who should skip it? Anyone expecting the gothic drama the name suggests. The rose and violet are there, but they are wearing a sensible cardigan. Is that really the spirit of a princess?
