Our take

Private Code opens with a boozy, syrupy burst of plum and sour cherry, the fruit lacquered with olibanum’s resinous incense and a whisper of osmanthus that teases apricot-like leather. It’s immediately rich, almost cloying, but the heart pulls it back from the brink: dates bring a jammy, sticky sweetness, while rose and orris root add a powdery, lipstick-tinted softness to the leather core. The dry down settles into a warm, balsamic base of oud, tolu balsam, benzoin, and incense, all wrapped in a clean, sheer musk that keeps the dark fruit from collapsing into total sludge.

The overall character is a vintage vanity table after a night of spilled cocktails and crushed velvet. It’s sweet, heavy, and distinctly synthetic in its fruity accords, yet the incense and oud give it a resinous, almost liturgical backbone. The projection is disappointingly soft at 2.86, and longevity barely crosses three and a half hours, which stings given the price of Haute Fragrance Company. This is a skin scent with aspirations of grandeur.

Who suits it? Someone who loves syrupy fruit over smoky leather, who wants a cozy, date-night gourmand that whispers rather than shouts. Skip it if you crave beast-mode performance or if sour cherry and the oops-I-spilled-soda-on-my-scarf vibe isn’t your thing. Best worn on a cool fall evening, tucked under a scarf, around a fireplace. It’s a short story, not a novel.
