Our take

Barolo opens with a blast of fig marmalade and star fruit, a sticky, almost jammy sweetness tangled with black pepper and a rhubarb tang that keeps it from tipping into cloying. Saffron adds a leathery warmth, while the citrus notes are just a quick flash before the heart takes over, and that heart is the whole show. Red wine and Mexican chocolate, rich and slightly bitter, bloom together like a velvet-lined library where a sommelier has left a half-empty glass of Barolo next to a bowl of dark truffles. The iris and rose are present but nearly swallowed by that boozy, cacao-laced core.

On the drydown, Virginia cedar and vetiver anchor the sweetness with a dry, earthy woodiness, while amber and patchouli keep things dark and slightly smoldering. It wears close, sillage moderate at best, and longevity is decent but not a marathon, you will need to reapply if you want it to last an evening. This is a strictly cool weather fragrance, nights only, for an intimate dinner or a chilly walk home, not your nine to five.

Who should wear it? The man who wants to smell like he just uncorked something expensive and ate a piece of Mexican chocolate while reading a book. Who should skip it? Anyone who finds fruit-forward scents too sweet or wants a fresh, airy signature because this is heavy, rich, and unapologetically indulgent. It feels more niche than mainstream, maybe a touch synthetic in the opening, but that heart redeems it. One question remains: can you handle being that warm and delicious on a cold night?
