Our take

Midnight Magic opens with a contradiction that some will love and others will find off-putting. The plum here is thick and syrupy, leaning heavily into the sweet accord, but the bergamot tries to slice through that density with a sharp, almost medicinal citrus edge. That clash never fully resolves. Instead of blending into a harmonious whole, the two top notes seem to pull in opposite directions, creating a slightly jarring introduction that can feel a bit synthetic to the nose.

As the fragrance moves into its heart, the neroli brings a bright, soapy floral quality that attempts to lift the weight of the opening. The orris adds a soft, powdery texture that aligns with the musk and ambrette waiting in the base. This middle phase is where the composition feels most cohesive, trading the harsh contrast of the start for a smoother, more aromatic profile that feels clean and slightly vintage in its floral arrangement.

The drydown settles into a mix of musky warmth and bitter cacao. The ambrette provides a slightly nutty, seed-like muskiness that grounds the scent, but the cacao here lacks the richness found in gourmand perfumes. It remains a thin, dry bitterness that sits close to the skin. The transition from the fruity top to this powdery, musky base is smooth, yet the overall impression stays firmly in the realm of a light, aromatic floral rather than a deep evening scent.

The initial friction between the plum and bergamot remains the defining trait of this release. Composed by Arnaud Winter, it offers a modern take on powdery musk, but the opening notes refuse to meld gracefully. If you are sensitive to that sharp citrus rubbing against heavy fruit, this formula will likely feel unbalanced from the very first spray.
