Our take

Fougere Qi opens with a sharp peppermint and anise sting that feels a little too blunt for the elegant room it wants to occupy. The Brazilian rosewood and bergamot try to smooth the edges, but the initial spray carries a synthetic brightness that sits awkwardly against the polished wood and stone of a quiet library. As the top notes settle, the heart reveals a dense cluster of white rose, jasmine, and heliotrope, all wrapped in the resinous smoke of frankincense. Bourbon geranium and lavender add a classic fougere structure, yet the floral blend leans heavy, almost cloying, before the base has a chance to pull it back.

The foundation of patchouli, oud, and labdanum arrives with a dark, balsamic warmth, joined by the animalic trace of civet and a layered musk that grounds the earlier sweetness. It is a complex, aromatic profile that moves from fresh spicy to powdery amber, but the peppermint never fully integrates. It lingers in the background like a loud conversation in a hallway, disrupting the sophisticated blend of rose and incense. Composed by Arthur Clay Emrick, this Jinx Smells release struggles to reconcile its bright, jarring opening with its rich, woody depths.
