Tobacco Desire

You are standing on a dim balcony as the air turns crisp, holding a ceramic cup of mulled wine. The steam rising from the drink carries a bright, zesty lift of tangerine and mandarin orange, softened by the deep purple skin of a ripe plum. As you lean against the railing, the fruit gives way to something richer. A pod of cacao melts into a thick drizzle of honey, while a creamy vanilla wraps around a single magnolia petal that landed on your sleeve earlier that evening.

The atmosphere deepens as the night settles in. The sweet gourmand air meets a dry, cured tobacco leaf tucked into the pocket of your wool coat. Saffron threads add a warm, expensive heat to the mix, and a drop of labdanum resin sticks to your fingertips. Beneath it all, the scent of worn leather from your gloves anchors the sweetness, pulling the entire composition down from the sky and into the safety of the material world.

Valerie Garnuch-Mentzel built this Mother of Pearl release to live in the space where a sugar shop meets a leather workshop. The cacao and honey refuse to let the tobacco turn too sharp, while the citrus from the beginning still flickers against the heavy base. You take a slow breath, feeling the magnolia float through the spice, wondering if the person across the street can catch the trail of fruit and leather you are leaving in the cold
