Huaka'i can feel crowded when all its elements arrive at once. The osmanthus, frangipani, and champaca bring a ripe, fruity floral weight that bumps against the sharp green of galbanum and cypress leaf, while two forms of oud and patchouli dig in with a dark, earthy presence. It is a dense composition, and the orris adds a powdery softness that sometimes struggles to find space between the spruce, balsam fir, and sandalwood varieties. Composed by Oswald Pare for Motif Olfactif in 2021, this unisex release does not unfold in a neat line. It presents a thick, aromatic wall where warm spicy and fresh spicy accents flicker without ever fully separating from the heavy woody base.
You are standing on a narrow path where wet pine needles cover the ground and the air carries a chill that makes you pull your coat tighter. A single frangipani blossom has fallen onto the moss nearby, its creamy petals bright against the dark earth, while the resinous scent of balsam fir mixes with the deep, carved-wood aroma of sandalwood that seems to rise from the trees themselves. The galbanum cuts through the sweetness of the fallen flower, and the oud sits in the background like old timber. It is the smell of a forest clearing where a floral garland was dropped and left to rest on the damp ground.
