Our take

Noir Exquis opens with a roasted chestnut note that’s almost caramelized, threaded through a bright orange peel that keeps the whole thing from turning into a sugar bomb. Within minutes, the coffee and maple syrup arrive together like a morning pastry left too long in a warm oven, rich and slightly singed. The orange blossom is there but it’s a ghost, hovering behind the darker notes rather than screaming for attention. As it dries down, the vanilla and tonka take over, softened by heliotrope’s powdery almond and a sliver of ebony that adds just enough smoke to remind you this isn’t a gourmand for the breakfast table. This is a scent that behaves like a hand-knitted wool scarf on a November night: cozy, yes, but with enough texture to keep it interesting. It feels natural enough, leaning into the raw sweetness of chestnut and coffee rather than synthetic candy floss. The longevity is respectable at around four to five hours, though the sillage stays close to the skin after the first two, which makes it more of an intimate companion than a room-filler. That intimate quality suits someone who wants a warm, nutty vanilla without shouting for attention, someone who enjoys a hint of bitterness in their sweetness. Skip it if you crave projection or if maple syrup smells like a diner accident. Wear it on a cold evening walk or curled up with a book, preferably in fall or winter, when the whole thing unfolds like a quiet, slightly melancholic exhale.
