Our take

Mathilde Bijaoui’s La Cérémonie de l’Encens opens with a sharp, almost brittle pop of black pepper, bright enough to clear the sinuses before the frankincense smolders in, dry and resinous with none of the churchy sweetness. The hinoki wood surfaces quickly, adding a green, citrusy bite that makes the cedarwood feel less like a dusty library shelf and more like a recently planed sauna panel. As the pepper fades, the amber accord warms things just enough to keep the composition from turning into a cold architectural sketch. The overall effect is less a grand ritual and more a solitary morning in a tatami room, incense smoke curling up through a single beam of winter light. Sillage is intimate to the point of being polite, hovering barely above the skin; longevity is modest at around four hours, which makes the 3.91 rating feel generous rather than harsh. This is a natural leaning scent, woody and aromatic, with a studied restraint that will reward those who prefer to smell clean, contemplative, and slightly smoky rather than sweet or loud. Best worn in fall or winter, for a daytime walk through a leafless garden or an evening of quiet reading. Skip it if you crave projection, gourmand warmth, or anything that announces your arrival before you do.
