Our take

Vanille Supermassive opens with a bright, almost peppery burst of elemi and bergamot, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a fresh affair. Within minutes, the heart swells with labdanum’s resinous honey, fir’s cathedral darkness, and a cinnamon that crackles rather than sweetens. The dry down is where Arnaud Poulain earns his keep: a vanilla that is not the sticky, boozy kind but something more fibrous and mossy, tangled with patchouli, ambroxan, and a whisper of caramel that never turns cloying. White musk and moss hold it together like damp wool on a cold evening.

The overall character is a single image: a leather-bound journal left open on a forest floor after a rainfall, the pages curling with resin and spice. It feels heavy in the sense of a thick, damp cloak, but surprisingly natural and niche in execution no synthetic frosting here. The numbers tell a sobering story sillage barely whispers at 2.71, longevity limps at 3.58. This is a skin scent, a private meditation, not a room announcement.

Best worn deep into fall and winter, for nighttime contemplation or a quiet dinner by a fire. Skip it if you want a vanilla bomb that projects or a sunny day companion. Vanille Supermassive is for those who appreciate a fragrance that stays close, that demands inhaling rather than wafting. It’s a subtle hug from a spiced, smoky ghost.
