Our take

There is a roughness here that some will call a lack of polish. The cloves and cinnamon carry a dry, dusty edge that scratches at the air rather than melting smoothly into the blend. Sichuan pepper and tangerine flash briefly with a bright, stinging heat that feels slightly at odds with the heavier materials surrounding it. Labdanum and amber push forward with a thick resinous weight, while patchouli and vetiver anchor the scene with a dark, earthy soil note. It is a crowded room of ingredients, and occasionally the lavender and geranium get lost in the shuffle of so much wood and spice.

The setting is a narrow cabin as a cold wind presses against the glass. Smoke from a dying fireplace curls near the ceiling, mixing with the scent of sandalwood panels and old cedar furniture. Someone has just peeled a bergamot in the kitchen, the oily citrus lingering near the stove where a vanilla bean sits next to a jar of tonka. Elemi and pink pepper seem to hang in the heat of the room, sharp against the soft musk and balsamic air. Guaiac wood and ambroxan add a charcoal-like dryness to the floorboards, making the entire space feel dense and enclosed.

Cinnamon dusts the collar of a wool coat thrown over a chair, and the air feels heavy with resin, as if the walls themselves are exhaling labdanum and amber. Patchouli clings to the rug, dark and slightly bitter, while the citrus notes hide in the corners near the window where the cold tries to enter. A hand reaches for a cup of tea on a table stained with vanilla and cloves, the steam carrying vetiver and musk into the quiet
