Our take

It opens with a tart slap of kumquat and neroli that cuts straight through the usual tuberose creaminess, startling you awake. That citrus bite fades quickly, and the flower takes over, but this is no innocent soliflore. The plum adds a jammy, almost boozy sweetness, while green grass keeps things from tipping into cloying territory, like chewing a blade of grass after a mouthful of ripe fruit. Then the base arrives, and here is where Tubereuse 3 Animale earns its name: tobacco, immortelle, and woody notes wrap the tuberose in a dry, hay-like, slightly animalic fur. It smells like a garden glove left in a dusty shed, leathery, stained with crushed petals, and faintly sweaty.

This is a heavy, warm, borderline gourmand floral with a rough edge. The sillage is modest, hovering close to the skin after an hour, but the longevity is solid, easily eight hours. That makes it wearable in almost any season, though it truly shines in fall and winter, when the heat and tobacco can breathe. It suits someone who wants their white florals dirtied up, who finds conventional tuberose too polite. Skip it if you prefer airy, transparent scents or if you are squeamish about a flower that snarls a little.

Wear it to a dimly lit dinner in late October, or on a rainy afternoon when you need a smoky hug. The whole thing feels like a neglected greenhouse full of blooms that have gone slightly feral, beautiful and untrimmed.
