Our take

Love & Crime opens with a spritz of blood mandarin that is less juice and more rind, all sharp citrus and pink pepper’s prickly warmth. Then the sugar hits, not cloying but crystalline, and star anise comes creeping in like a memory of black licorice. The floral notes are barely there, a ghost in the background, letting the vanilla and cacao take over in the drydown. That base is a rich, powdery cocoa dusted over warm vanilla, with an edge from the anise that keeps it from veering into plain dessert territory. The whole thing feels like unwrapping a dark chocolate truffle that someone forgot a drop of absinthe in, curious and slightly dangerous but comfortingly sweet.

It wears close to the skin, sillage moderate and longevity decent enough for an evening out, but don’t expect to leave a roomful of heads turning. The numbers tell you it shimmers best when the air is cold, fall and winter especially, and it leans heavily toward night with that snug, indulgent weight. If you crave sugary gourmands without a suntan lotion vibe, this is your niche. If star anise makes you wince or you prefer fresh, airy scents, skip it. Wear it for a dinner date in November, a cozy reading nook, or when you want your perfume to feel like a secret rather than a shout.
