Corpalium by Marlou opens with a damp, herbal iris that feels more like root cellar than flower shop, the ambrette lending a fuzzy animalic warmth that immediately signals this is not a polite fragrance. Fenugreek adds a curious maple-like bitterness, while tobacco and castoreum creep in early, turning the composition toward a leathery, smoky hide left out in the rain. As it dries, the woody base of guaiac and cedar emerges, powdery yet still unwashed, like the inside of an old saddle bag that once held dried herbs and a forgotten cigar. The overall character is a single vivid image: a horse blanket left too long in a barn loft, steeped in damp hay, sweat, and the ghost of pipe smoke.

This is a natural-smelling, heavy, introverted scent that stays very close to skin, true to its modest sillage rating of 2.08. Longevity is similarly restrained at just over three hours, which is its real weakness you can’t spray and forget; you’ll need to reapply or press your nose to your wrist to catch it after lunch. It feels distinctly niche, not challenging for shock value but quietly uncompromising, like a hand-rolled cigarette compared to a factory pack.

Who should wear it? Someone who wants to smell like a moody, rainy afternoon in the countryside, not like a night out. It suits spring, fall, and winter equally, but will vanish in heat. Skip it if you crave projection or any sweetness at all. Wear it to a bookstore in November, or alone on a long walk when you want to feel wrapped in something strange and tender.
