Raffinee
Fragrance notes
Character
Raffinee opens like a velvet choker loosened just enough to breathe, a blast of carnation and plum that is both sweet and sharp, with clary sage and orange blossom cutting through the fruit like a blade of green silk. The lemon and bergamot are there but they don’t last, quickly swallowed by a floral heart so dense it feels almost claustrophobic. Orris root, tonka bean, tuberose, ylang ylang, hyacinth, orchid, osmanthus, mimosa, all piled on at once, a powdery white floral avalanche that smells deeply of the 1980s. This is not a shy fragrance. It is a heavy, warm, spicy oriental that wants to be noticed, and it succeeds, though the sillage sits at a modest 3.42 which suggests it stays close to the skin rather than projecting like a shout. Longevity is decent but not exceptional, around 3.88, meaning you will catch wisps of it hours later but the grand opening fades faster than you might hope.
The drydown is where Raffinee earns its keep. Cinnamon and incense melt into sandalwood and vanilla, with a dusty vetiver and cypress giving it a slightly musty, antique feel. It is sweet but not cloying, powdery but not baby soft, more like the inside of an old wooden jewelry box lined with faded velvet. It feels distinctly synthetic in the heart, as many floral orientals of its era do, but that is part of its charm if you lean towards vintage style. This fragrance suits a woman who appreciates opulence and does not mind smelling like she raided a 1982 department store counter, or someone who wants a cozy, spiced floral for winter evenings. Skip it if you prefer crisp, modern aquatics or anything transparent. Wear it in autumn and winter, mostly at night, when that cinnamon and incense can wrap around you like a heated blanket. It is a beautiful relic, not a masterpiece, but a warm, indulgent one. 🌸
