Our take

Ambre & Santal opens with a sharp jab of rosemary and bergamot, a green and citric slap that cuts through the morning chill before the fig leaf and rose step in. The heart is a strange, jammy sweetness with a leafy edge, not floral in the romantic sense but something more like crushed stems left on a sun-warmed stone. Then the base settles: sandalwood and labdanum meet vanilla and cedar in a dry, powdery amber that clings close to the skin. This is not a bomb. The sillage is barely a whisper, hovering around 2.86 out of 5, and longevity clocks in at a modest 3.19, so you are paying for intimacy, not projection.

The overall character is like a wool blanket that has been stored too long with a sachet of dried herbs, comforting and slightly dusty. It feels naturally soft, nothing synthetic or loud, which is either a virtue or a frustration depending on your appetite. It suits the person who wants to smell warm without announcing themselves, who will press their wrist to their own nose rather than fill a room. Skip it if you crave a roaring campfire of an amber or want to leave a wake. The numbers confirm winter is its true home, fall a close second, and it works equally for day or night, a quiet companion for sweaters and overcast afternoons. Karine Dubreuil-Sereni made an Oriental Fougere that is more about the wool than the bonfire, and that is exactly its charm.
