Our take

Cilice smells like standing near a woodstove where someone just tossed a handful of resin onto the coals. Frankincense and birch rise with cedar and leather, while beeswax and honey lend a thick, golden weight to the air. Elemi and benzoin add a balsamic glow, and castoreum with labdanum push the scent into an animalic, lived-in territory. Cloves and papyrus bring a dry, aromatic edge, and oud, angelica, ambergris, and coumarin round out a composition that feels heavy, warm, and unapologetically dense.

The scent stays present for a good while once it settles on skin, though it does not project far beyond a personal radius. It fits a quiet morning when the heat has not fully returned to the house, or a cool evening walk where the air bites a little and a heavy scarf is pulled up to the chin. The amber and smoky accords feel at home in that kind of stillness, when the world outside is grey and the air is sharp enough to make a warm, resinous skin scent feel like armor.

Stephen Dirkes built something deeply textured here, but the density can become oppressive. The beeswax and honey lean sweet, and combined with the leather and balsamic notes, the blend sometimes feels too thick to wear comfortably in close quarters.
