Our take

Grapefruit and violet open this blend with a bright, slightly powdery lift that feels polished rather than playful. Cinnamon enters soon after, adding a warm edge that keeps the start from leaning too clean. The transition moves steadily into Virginia cedar and cardamom, where the wood reads dry and the spice stays mild rather than hot. Leather sits in the middle with a smooth, slightly cool texture that grounds the citrus without turning heavy. It is an aromatic profile that feels composed and deliberate, never loud or messy.

Alvin Bunawan built Bois de Langbian for cooler days when the air feels crisp and the light stays low. The Haitian vetiver and oakmoss in the base give it a damp, earthy depth that suits a wool coat and a quiet street more than a sunny patio. Ambrette and amberwood soften the edges so the woods do not feel bare, while the violet accord lingers as a faint floral haze. It wears like a finished thought, neat and self-assured, with a clarity that makes it easy to picture on someone who prefers subtlety over spectacle.

The one limitation is the leather. It reads a bit synthetic here, with a plastic edge that occasionally clashes with the natural feel of the cedar and vetiver. That slight artificial note keeps the composition from feeling fully cohesive, especially when the moss and amberwood try to pull it toward something more organic. It is not a dealbreaker, but it does stop Bois de Langbian from reaching the level of a true niche standout.
