Our take

Bleu de Chine opens with a brittle, almost clinical brightness: tuberose and jasmine locked in a frosty grip with lily of the valley, the bergamot adding a faint citrus chill. It is a 1987 chypre floral that refuses to soften for anyone. The heart is where this fragrance earns its reputation, oakmoss and sandalwood wrapping ylang ylang in a dusty, green embrace with vetiver’s earthy spine holding everything upright. The dry down turns powdery but not sweet, resins and tonka bean softened by vanilla and musk into a warm, slightly melancholic finish.

This is the scent of a linen blouse crumpled in a leather satchel after a long weekend in the country. It feels notably natural in its opening but grows more synthetic and dated in the heart, which some will call “vintage charm” and others will call dusty. Longevity is decent at around four or five hours, sillage sits close to the skin, so this is not a room filler. It suits someone who admires classic chypres but wants a touch of floral sweetness, the kind of person who dresses for herself and doesn’t mind that a fragrance stays on her collar rather than announcing her arrival. Skip it if you crave projection or sugary modernity. Wear this on crisp fall afternoons with a wool coat, or during a quiet winter evening when you want to smell like a memory rather than a statement.
