Our take

Aldehydes open No 5 Eau de Toilette on that unmistakable sparkle, powdery and bright before ylang-ylang and neroli soften it into something floral. Amalfi lemon and bergamot keep the top crisp, and the heart is a dense cluster of iris, jasmine, rose, orris root and lily-of-the-valley that manages to feel unified rather than crowded.

Musk, sandalwood, oakmoss, vetiver, amber, vanille and patchouli anchor the base into something dry and earthy underneath all that floral sparkle. This works equally well behind a desk or across a dinner table, a rare fragrance built to move between both settings without feeling out of place in either.

Longevity is average here, present through a normal stretch of wear without insisting on more. What it projects is a close, contained radius, caught by whoever sits beside you at dinner, not trailing down a hallway ahead of you. The powdery finish is where the whole composition settles, soft and dry more than sweet.

Anyone expecting a modern, fruity floral will find the aldehydes and oakmoss old-fashioned by comparison, but that particular combination of citrus, iris and musk has aged into its own category, not simply gone stale.
