Our take

The original No 5 built its reputation on abstraction, powder and aldehydes standing in for any single flower. This Eau Premiere keeps that idea but turns the volume down. Aldehydes still open it, a bright, faintly soapy fizz over neroli and ylang-ylang, and the whole effect feels combed smooth, nothing like the dense powder of the vintage extrait.

Jasmine and rose carry the middle, and sandalwood and vetiver add a dry, woody counterpoint to them, while vanilla warms the base without piling on. Staying power sits at a fair, middling level, present through a full wear but never insistent, and the trail stays soft too, a floral cloud that clings to skin and clothing without pushing past the person wearing it.

Spring is where it belongs, though it holds up fine into summer and fall, better suited to daytime than evening. Wear it to an office, a lunch, anywhere polish matters more than volume, the soapy aldehydes giving the florals a crisp, defined edge instead of letting them blur into soft-focus. Composed by Jacques Polge, this is the idea of No 5 with the density turned down, easier to live with day to day.
