Our take

Grapefruit and mandarin orange give Gabrielle a bright, slightly bitter start, with black currant adding a dark fruit note underneath. Orange blossom, jasmine, ylang-ylang and tuberose stack up fast in the heart, four white and yellow florals layered rather than blended into one shape. The sillage stays soft and contained, and staying power wears at a fair, middle-of-the-road pace on skin.

Pear and pink pepper keep some brightness alive even as the florals thicken, and by the base, musk, sandalwood, cashmeran and orris turn everything soft and a little animalic. Orris in particular gives the base a powdery, slightly cool finish, an odd but effective counterpart to all the ripe white and yellow florals stacked in the heart. The transition from citrus to heavy florals to warm musk happens quickly, without much of a settled middle stretch.

Spring is when it makes the most sense, though the musky base makes it work in cooler weather too, not just spring. That constant shifting from citrus to floral to musk is arguably the most memorable thing about it, more restless than settled. The four florals never fully settle into each other, and that unresolved, layered quality is what gives Gabrielle its character.
