Our take

No 22 Parfum is Chanel’s cooler, sharper sister to No 5, a floral aldehyde that opens with a crystalline burst of soapy citrus and white floral sparkle. The aldehydes here feel like crushed ice against a tiled floor, while tuberose emerges slowly, creamy and indolic, lending an animalic warmth that cuts the initial chill. As it settles, the soapiness softens into a powdery, slightly musky skin scent, almost invisible after an hour or two. The whole affair is like a starched linen handkerchief left in a drawer with a single overblown tuberose stem: pristine on the surface, faintly dirty beneath.

This is a very natural-feeling composition for its era, modern only in its restraint. It is feminine without being sweet, clean without being sterile. The sillage is modest and the longevity average, which means you must spray generously or accept its intimacy. That is the weakness: for a parfum, it whispers when you want it to sing.

It suits anyone who loves classic white florals but finds No 5 too powdery or heavy. Skip it if you demand projection or prefer gourmands. Wear it on a crisp spring morning or a cool autumn afternoon, indoors with cashmere. It works equally well for a daytime meeting or an evening dinner, though it fades before the night truly begins. A good fragrance, not a great one, but deeply respectable.
