Aromatics in Black opens with a taut, sour-sweet pop of pink grapefruit and bergamot over a pulpy, almost jammy plum, like a citrus knife slicing into a dark fruitcake. The heart unravels a dense floral trio, jasmine and osmanthus smudged with neroli’s bitter edge, all wrapped in the warm, powdery fuzz of amber and vanilla. The drydown lands on myrrh’s resinous incense, a dry vetiver root, and tonka’s sweet dust, settling into a woody amber that feels more sophisticated than the price tag suggests.
This is a perfume that wears like a black silk blouse with the top button undone, a little mysterious but not chilly. It’s noticeably synthetic in the opening, that grapefruit note has a candied, almost hairspray fizz, but it softens into something richer and more natural as hours pass. Longevity and sillage are moderate, about three hours of noticeable presence before it becomes a close skin scent, so be ready to reapply. It suits someone who wants a grown-up floral oriental without the heavy price of a niche bottle, but if you hate powdery or throat-burning sweetness, skip it. Best worn for fall evenings or a crisp winter afternoon, when its warmth can unfurl without the heat turning the amber into a sticky mess.
