Our take

Mark Buxton’s Emotional Drop opens like a dewy stem snapped clean in half, releasing a tart, fizzy gooseberry that cuts through the air before violet leaves and neroli soften the edges. The heart bends toward a black currant blossom that reads more as a mood than a fruit, backed by a cool, powdery orris and a rose oil that never gets cloying or proper. Base notes of vetiver, balsam fir, and sandalwood pull it down into a gentle, woody hum, but the whole composition feels like a spring afternoon trapped in a glass jar, humid and green and just a little ozonic.

This is not a heavy scent. Its sillage hovers at 2.73, a private cloud that stays within arm’s length, and longevity taps out around three to four hours, which is a genuine weakness if you expect to smell it past lunch. The sweetness is restrained, more of a glisten than a syrup, and the overall character leans niche in its refusal to shout, though the synthetic freshness of the aquatic ozonic notes keeps it from feeling truly natural. It is a day scent through and through, perfect for a breezy Sunday tea or a walk through wet grass, and it works best in spring and fall, less so in the dead heat of winter.

Wear Emotional Drop if you like your florals with a crisp, almost sour edge and don’t mind reapplying. Skip it if you want projection to announce your arrival or prefer something warm and honeyed. It is a quiet, intelligent perfume, like a hand-painted watercolor of a garden after a brief rain, lovely but never demanding center stage. 🌿
