Our take

Devin opens with a slap of green, the galbanum sharp and almost bitter, and the aldehydes lending a metallic, retro fizz that feels lifted straight from the 1970s. A brief citrus flicker of lemon and bergamot tries to soften the blow but gets trampled by artemisia and lavender, turning the top into a brambly, herbal crescendo. The heart settles into a surprising pastoral elegance, pine needles mingling with a dusty carnation and a whisper of cinnamon, but the caraway adds a sour, almost savory edge that keeps things from getting cozy. It dries down into a classic chypre base of leather, oakmoss, labdanum, and patchouli, all wrapped in a low-hum musk, like an old tweed jacket left in a damp forest.

This fragrance feels like a weathered hunting lodge after a morning rain, all varnished wood, wet leaves, and leather boots left by the fire. It is emphatically natural smelling in its greenness, but undeniably dated a mainstream powerhouse for its era, not today’s easy freshie. The longevity is moderate, maybe four hours, and sillage stays politely close, which keeps it from becoming overbearing but also demands reapplication. Wear it in spring or fall, daytime ideally, for a brisk walk or a business lunch with people who appreciate tradition. It suits a man who prefers character over compliments. Skip it if you want sweet or clean, or if you dislike the scratchy, unapologetic green of galbanum and pine.
