Our take

Black Is Black wears its rough edges openly. The lemon snaps at the nose with a sharp, almost synthetic brightness that clashes against the lavender rather than blending into it. This opening feels thin and a bit rushed, lacking the smooth transition one expects from a refined barbershop scent. Yet, as the initial sharpness settles, the scene shifts to a cedar cabin at night. The air inside is cool and still. A fire recently extinguished leaves a faint trace of ash near the stone hearth. You sit near the window where the glass is fogged, breathing in the atmosphere as the juniper appears. It smells like crushed needles gathered from the forest floor outside, damp and resinous. The patchouli adds a deep, soil-like weight that anchors the room.

The balsam fir reinforces the illusion of a dark woodland pressing against the walls, its evergreen character dry and shadowed. Oakmoss creeps through the foundation, lending a damp, stone-wall texture that makes the space feel ancient. This is not a clean or polished environment. It is earthy and raw, the kind of aromatic fougere that thrives in solitude and shadow. The citrus eventually recedes into the background, leaving the herbs and woods to dominate the air. The mood remains grounded and heavily mossy.
