Our take

Olivia Giacobetti’s Vamp à NY opens with a boozy, heady slap of tuberose and rum that feels less like a cocktail party and more like a gilded cage at two in the morning. The tuberose is indolic and fleshy, the rum dark and sticky, and within minutes a singular vanilla note slides in to smooth the edges into something plush and narcotic. The dry down settles into a resinous trio of benzoin, tolu balsam, and Peru balsam, turning the whole affair into a softly powdered, ambered skin scent that clings close. The overall character is best captured as a vintage compact mirror left on a velvet banquette: smudged, warm, and slightly naughty.

This is a sweet, balsamic, and decidedly powdery oriental that leans more attar-like than modern gourmand. It feels natural in its components but sings a niche tune, intimate rather than loud. With longevity and sillage hovering around moderate (3.33 and 3.10 respectively), it won’t announce you from across a room, which is actually its strength. Wear it for a daytime meeting in autumn when you want a secret second skin, or layer it heavily for a winter evening date. It suits someone who loves unabashed sweetness and creamy florals, but if you recoil from powdery vanilla or find tuberose too cloying, step away. The only real flaw is that modest projection; you may find yourself reapplying. Then again, isn’t that part of the seduction?
