Our take

Cardamom and pink pepper crackle at the top, a sharp, almost electric fizz that is quickly softened by a curious dab of red berries. Fragonard’s Santal Cardamome opens like a spice market at dawn, the air still cool and the baskets of cardamom pods and dried chili peppers giving off a dry, dusty warmth. Incense and laurel leaf creep in soon after, adding an aromatic, almost church-like stillness, while a faint chili pepper heat lingers at the edges, more of a tingle than a burn. This is not a loud or demanding fragrance. The sandalwood base is creamy but shot through with a powdery benzoin and a whisper of clean musk, the whole composition feeling like a well-worn cashmere scarf that has spent an afternoon near a smoldering fire.

It is undeniably pleasant, a masterclass in balance between fresh spice and soft wood. Yet the longevity is a quiet disappointment at just under three hours, and the sillage barely leaves a footprint. You will smell this on yourself far more than anyone near you. That makes it ideal for the office, for daytime errands in autumn or even a brisk winter walk, places where intimacy matters more than announcement. Who should skip it? Anyone who needs their perfume to shout through a crowded room or last through a full dinner shift. This is a personal scent for a close-hugging day, a little grey cardigan of a fragrance.
