Our take

Alea 71 opens with violet and bergamot that feel cool and slightly dusty, while orange blossom adds a soft, creamy brightness. The floral top settles fast into a heart where iris and plum take charge, the plum giving a dark, juicy weight to the powdery iris. Incense curls through the middle, adding a dry, resinous smoke that keeps the rose from leaning too sweet.

The base is a dense, old-school chypre foundation built on oakmoss, patchouli, and Russian leather. Labdanum and amber bring a warm, sticky resin that mixes with vanilla to create a golden, slightly animalic skin scent. Sandalwood and musk smooth the edges, but the leather remains prominent, giving the entire composition a rugged, forest-floor character that feels more masculine than sweet.

BZ Parfums composed this with Bohdan Zubchenko, and the result is a heavy, vintage-style fragrance that demands a specific mood. The sheer number of base notes creates a crowded, slightly muddy drydown where the individual elements struggle to breathe. It is a challenging wear for anyone who prefers clean, transparent compositions over dense, earthy ones.
