The wind is cool enough to make you pull your jacket tighter as you walk through a garden where the last of the season’s green still clings to the branches. A bright spray of bergamot cuts through the air first, sharp and clean, followed quickly by the biting snap of pepper that makes the air feel alive. Beneath your feet, crushed green leaves release a damp, earthy scent that mixes with the spice. As you move further along the path, the sharp edges soften. A damp patch of earth nearby gives off a deep, dark patchouli aroma, while a hidden cluster of freesia adds a subtle, watery floral touch. There is a warm, salty mineral quality in the air that feels heavy and grounding, wrapping around the sharper citrus notes and pulling them toward the soil.
The path opens near an old wooden structure where sap is slowly seeping from a fresh cut in the timber, releasing a sticky, golden resin scent. Dry vetiver roots lie nearby, smelling of cool dirt and dry grass, while a clean, pale musk settles into the fabric of your sleeves. The pepper remains faintly on your skin, a tiny spark against the heavy wood and balsamic air. You stand still and watch the light hit the wet bark of a tree, where a single drop of amber-colored sap glistens like a hard piece of candy against the dark, rough grain.
