Our take

Soir de Paris opens with a generous handful of violet lozenges, tart peach, and a bergamot so polite it barely whispers. The fruit is not juice but a faint jam smeared over powder, and that powder defines everything. Iris and heliotrope smother the heart, turning rose and ylang ylang into ghostly boudoir shapes, while lily of the valley fights for air and loses. This is an old grain, a tin of face powder overturned on a mahogany vanity in a room where the window has been shut since 1928. Ernest Beaux built it for a woman who wanted to smell like a memory of herself. The base settles into a quiet amber and sandalwood dusted with vanilla and musk, but the sillage is a polite suggestion at best. At 3.16, you wear this for yourself or for a close embrace. Longevity barely clears three hours, which is a genuine shame. The votes give it 4.18, but I suspect nostalgia pads that average. It suits someone who loves vintage powdery florals and does not need projection, someone who wants to smell like an heirloom. Skip it if you crave modern sweetness or any loud statement. Best on a spring afternoon with a light coat, or on a winter night when you plan to stay home and read.
